The popular Cowboy Ausoverwatch, McCree, gets a new name. Blizzard reacts to the sexism scandal of the last weeks.
In recent weeks, Activision Blizzard turned a lot to the great sexism and discrimination scandal. In World of Warcraft, they had already drawn consequences and allusions to the former developer Alex Afrasiabi short-manally deleted from the game. Now Overwatch also moves and takes a big change in itself: The Cowboy McCree is renamed.
What happened? The Owatch team has published a message and discloses a decision that many had long since long ago or feared. The Cowboy McCree in OverVATCH will receive a new name. However, this is a process that takes several months to make all related adjustments. After all, not only the name must be transformed into written form, but also in the sound files and graphics, such as spray logos or skins.
How exactly McCree will be called in the future is not yet known and will probably revealed by Blizzard in a few months.
Why does Blizzard do that? In the course of the investigations of a Californian authority, many Blizzard employees came into criticism. Including Jesse McCree, after which the cowboy was named. Jesse McCree worked as Lead Level Designer at Diablo 4 and was on a photo of the controversial Cosby Suite to see. He left Blizzard a few weeks ago.
The exact motivations for renaming betrayed Blizzard on Twitter. The full Tweet we have translated here:
We have created the Overwatch Universe for the idea of inclusion, equality and hope as building blocks of a better future. This is central to the game and the Overwatch Team.
Worth we will continue to discuss how we can best stand to our values and our commitment to create a game world that can also reflect, demonstrate, we believe that it is necessary, the name of the hero, the currently as McCree is known to change in something that shows better what Overwatch stands.
UNS is aware that any change to such a popular and central hero needed in the world of playing time to be performed correctly and we will keep you up to date on how this work progresses. In the short term, we had planned to publish a story bow in September with new Lore and Game Content, in which McCree was a Zental component .
Weil We will want to insert this change into the story bow, we will postpone this to a later date this year and instead publish an FFA map in September. In the future, Ingame characters are no longer named after real employees and we will think more about it when we install allusions to the real world in Overwatch.
The will help us to clarify that we create a fictional universe, which is undoubtedly unlike the real world. This should show better that the creation of Overlatch is a team performance. The work on these updates already takes place and that is only part of our consecutive recognition on honest reflection and the effort to make all necessary changes to build a future for which it is worth fighting .
Uns is aware that deeds bring more than words and we hope that we can demonstrate our mission, with the aim of making Overlatch for better Ingame experience and from our team the best possible .

This is how the community reacts: The playership in the subreddit and on Twitter makes this announcement mixed up. There are many that understand and welcome this step. It is not the most important thing at the moment, but a good signal and a meaningful rule for the future.
Others are erased about this change and wish that the name of the character will persist. They met him as McCree and do not associate with a Blizzard employee. For some, this is a big change on the story or a sign that decisions were made due to political views.
Again others take the whole thing with humor and suggest Alberne names as Unnamed DPS Hero or Shooty McShootFace.
Last but not least, sometimes one explains that the payload driver was right on the Hollywood map all the time. Because he has said since the release of Overwatch: Jesse McCree? A terrible name for a cowboy! Who would have thought that he would be right. What do you think of this thing?
